Edith, Heart-to-Heart Mentor
When I signed the commitment to become a mentor, I expected to meet with a woman younger than myself, on a twice-a-month basis, and invest in her existing spiritual growth. When I met my mentee, I learned that she was just about my age, was not currently walking with God, and desired contact on a weekly basis. I remember feeling worried after our first meeting. I felt incompetent and wasn’t sure how I was going to be helpful. She had been hurt and betrayed by multiple people in her life, and I struggled to believe that she would allow herself to completely trust God.

What I didn’t expect was for her to give up control so quickly. I started to realize that my role was to be a voice of hope, to give her encouragement, and to show her unconditional love. We explored her pain, talked about who God was and how He alone could bring her the healing and peace that she needed. She became incredibly honest and vulnerable and in the midst of it, she also opened her heart. She agreed to work through the Mosaic "volunteer staff" class (membership class) to learn more about our church community. It was through that process that I started to notice a dramatic shift in her life. By taking small steps, she started to seek God’s voice and started to experience God’s love.

From my experience of being a mentor, I’ve learned to trust God more than ever! I’m reminded that God works in the lives of people who honestly search for him. He longs to restore us if we are willing to allow Him into our hearts.

“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart, these, O God, You will not despise.”
- Psalm 51:17

Amy, Heart-to-Heart Mentee
The experience I had with Heart-to-Heart Mentoring can ultimately be described as ... the healing of my feminine soul. When I signed up to get a mentor it was at a time in my life when my spirit was completely broken. Trying desperately to get out of an abusive relationship and finally succumbing to the fact that my broken childhood had left me with wounds that I could not heal on my own -- I needed a strong, wise, loving female figure in my life to help make God’s healing very real to me.

The wonderful women who lead Heart-to-Heart take great care in prayerfully pairing the mentors to the mentees. I was paired with Edith because she was able to not only empathize with my situation, but she was also equipped with the skills to help me start healing from the past. We would meet for meals or coffee and also talk on the phone, as well as spend time together just having fun. One of the biggest things I learned from the mentoring experience is that it is absolutely vital for women of God to be in community with one another. In today’s broken world we can help each other by being sisters, mothers, and friends to one another. Thank you to Edith, Tami, and Linda for being the loving, caring, godly women you are!
